I don’t use the audio version much but the few times I’ve traveled, it is so comforting to not have to skip the Office in order to keep my hands on the steering wheel and my eyes in the road. It is so calming of any worries to pull out my phone, open the app, and be able to connect with Our Lord at those times I need Him most. Many times I’ve been sitting in a doctor’s waiting room at the time of Mid Morning prayer. It is such a blessing to have the Divine Office in my pocket. Now I don’t need to turn a lamp on as I use to when I used the Office printed volumes. Having the Divine Office on my phone is absolutely the best thing ever! The sense of community is so wonderful as I see how many others are praying at the same time as myself. When I discovered this app, all of my concerns of ribbon placement were gone. I have prayed the Divine Office for many years. Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part Two, Section One, Chapter Two. Incorporated into Christ by the Holy Spirit, “we are the temple of the living God.” What matters above all is that, when the faithful assemble in the same place, they are the “living stones,” gathered to be “built into a spiritual house.” The Body of the risen Christ is the spiritual temple from which the source of living water emanates. The whole earth is sacred and entrusted to the children of men. The worship “in Spirit and in truth” of the New Covenant is not tied exclusively to any one place. The Liturgy of the Hours, which is like an extension of the Eucharistic celebration, does not exclude but rather (in a complementary way) calls forth the various devotions of the People of God, especially adoration and worship of the Blessed Sacrament. The lectio divina, where the Word of God is so read and meditated that it becomes prayer, is thus rooted in the liturgical celebration. Moreover, the reading from the Word of God at each Hour with the subsequent responses or troparia and readings from the Fathers and spiritual masters at certain Hours, reveal the deeper meanings of the mystery being celebrated, assist in understanding the psalms, and help one prepare for silent prayer. The hymns and litanies of the Liturgy of the Hours integrate the prayer of the psalms into the age of the Church, expressing the symbolism of the time of day, the liturgical season, or the feast being celebrated. ![]() The celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours demands not only harmonizing the voice with the praying heart, but also a deeper “understanding of the liturgy and of the Bible, especially of the Psalms.” The laity, too, are encouraged to recite the divine office either with the priests, among themselves, or individually. ![]() In it, Christ himself “continues his priestly work through his Church.” His members participate according to their own place in the Church and the circumstances of their lives. ![]() The Liturgy of the Hours is the prayer of the whole People of God. Please leave your suggestions or links as a comment and we will incorporate the most useful materials into this site. The Ministry of Divine Office has a mission to gather assets beneficial to our community in praying the Liturgy of the Hours. We appreciate contributions from you. In this way the Church fulfills the Lord’s precept to pray without ceasing, at once offering its praise to God the Father and interceding for the salvation of the world.” - Office of the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship. “From ancient times the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the liturgy of the hours.

Studying this imbalance could help scientists paint a clearer picture of why our universe is matter-filled.Sint Joriskerk, Venlo, Netherlands on the 29 th of April 2022 Physicists may find hints as to what this process might be by studying the subtle differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter particles created in high-energy proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In the same way, some unknown mechanism could have interfered with the oscillating particles to cause a slight majority of them to decay as matter. However, if a special kind of marble rolled across a table of spinning coins and caused every coin it hit to land on its head, it would disrupt the whole system. In the same way, half of the oscillating particles in the early universe should have decayed as matter and the other half as antimatter. A coin has a 50-50 chance of landing on its head or its tail, so if enough coins are spun in exactly the same way, half should land on heads and the other half on tails. It can land on its heads or its tails, but it cannot be defined as "heads" or "tails" until it stops spinning and falls to one side. Some unknown entity intervening in this process in the early universe could have caused these "oscillating" particles to decay as matter more often than they decayed as antimatter.Ĭonsider a coin spinning on a table. Researchers have observed spontaneous transformations between particles and their antiparticles, occurring millions of times per second before they decay. Physicists are keen to discover the reasons why. In the past few decades, particle-physics experiments have shown that the laws of nature do not apply equally to matter and antimatter. Nevertheless, a tiny portion of matter – about one particle per billion – managed to survive. If matter and antimatter are created and destroyed together, it seems the universe should contain nothing but leftover energy. During the first fractions of a second of the Big Bang, the hot and dense universe was buzzing with particle-antiparticle pairs popping in and out of existence. Matter and antimatter particles are always produced as a pair and, if they come in contact, annihilate one another, leaving behind pure energy. The positively charged positron, for example, is the antiparticle to the negatively charged electron. One of the greatest challenges in physics is to figure out what happened to the antimatter, or why we see an asymmetry between matter and antimatter.Īntimatter particles share the same mass as their matter counterparts, but qualities such as electric charge are opposite. Something must have happened to tip the balance. Comparatively, there is not much antimatter to be found. But today, everything we see from the smallest life forms on Earth to the largest stellar objects is made almost entirely of matter. The Big Bang should have created equal amounts of matter and antimatter in the early universe. ![]() If the amount of water inside a cell falls to a value that is too low, the cytosol becomes too concentrated with solutes to carry on normal cellular activities if too much water enters a cell, the cell may burst and be destroyed. This fluid volume tends to be very stable, because the amount of water in living cells is closely regulated. The ICF makes up about 60 percent of the total water in the human body, and in an average-size adult male, the ICF accounts for about 25 liters (seven gallons) of fluid ( Figure 26.1.3). Figure 26.1.1 – Water Content of the Body’s Organs and Tissues: Water content varies in different body organs and tissues, from as little as 8 percent in the teeth to as much as 85 percent in the brain. In contrast, teeth have the lowest proportion of water, at 8–10 percent. Your brain and kidneys have the highest proportions of water, which composes 80–85 percent of their masses. The percent of body water changes with development, because the proportions of the body given over to each organ and to muscles, fat, bone, and other tissues change from infancy to adulthood ( Figure 26.1.1). Human beings are mostly water, ranging from about 75 percent of body mass in infants to about 50–60 percent in adult men and women, to as low as 45 percent in old age. An appropriate balance of solutes inside and outside of cells must be maintained to ensure normal function. As a result, water will move into and out of cells and tissues, depending on the relative concentrations of the water and solutes found there. Osmosis is basically the diffusion of water from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration, along an osmotic gradient across a semi-permeable membrane. In the body, water moves through semi-permeable membranes of cells and from one compartment of the body to another by a process called osmosis. For instance, sodium ions (Na +) and chloride ions (Cl –) are often referred to as electrolytes. Often in medicine, an electrolyte is referred to as a mineral dissociated from a salt that carries an electrical charge (an ion). In the human body, solutes vary in different parts of the body, but may include proteins-including those that transport lipids, carbohydrates, and, very importantly, electrolytes.
